His overall loss percentage is 6.25%

Given : A real estate agent sells two sites for rs. 18000 each. On one he gains 25% and on the other he loses 25%.

To find : His gain or loss percentage.

Solution :

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process. (our goal is to calculate his total loss or profit percentage)

In case of 25% gain :

Let, the cost price = Rs. x

Selling price = x + (x × 25/100) = x + x/4 = Rs. 5x/4

Now,

5x/4 = 18000

x = 18000 × 4/5

x = 14400

So, the cost price = Rs. 14400

In case of 25% loss :

Let, the cost price = Rs. y

Selling price = y - (y × 25/100) = y - y/4 = Rs. 3y/4

Now,

3y/4 = 18000

y = 18000 × 4/3

y = 24000

So, the cost price = Rs. 24000

Total selling price = 18000 + 18000 = Rs. 36000

Total cost price = 14400 + 24000 = Rs. 38400

As, the total cost price is greater than the total selling price, that's why the deal produces a loss.

Loss amount = Total CP - Total SP = 38400 - 36000 = Rs. 2400

Loss percentage = 100 × (Loss amount ÷ Total CP) = 100 × (2400/38400) = 6.25%

Hence, his overall loss percentage is 6.25%
