A rear-view mirror of a car has a radius of curvature of 2 m. If another car is located 4 m behind this mirror, find the position, nature and size of the image.

u = -4 m

R=2f ==> f = R/2 = 2/2 = 1 m.

f =1 m

Since the car is 4 m behind the mirror the image formed will be virtual, erect, and diminished.

1/v + 1/u = 1/f

1/v = 1/f - 1/u

1/v = 1 - 1/-4

1/v = 1 + 1/4 = 5/4

v = 4/5 = 0.8 m

The car will appear to be 0.8 m behind the mirror.
