A rectangle is surrounded by two sets of congruent trapeziums as shown in the adjacent figure.Find the area covered by each? ​

Solution:

height of trapezium ABFE = 20-16/2=4/2=2cm

similarly heights of other trapezium is 2 cm

area of ABEF and CDHG =

  \frac{1}{2}  \times (x + y) \times h \\  =  \frac{1}{2}  \times (18 + 14) \times 2 \\  = 32 \:  {cm}^{2}

area of BFGC and EHDA =

 =  \frac{1}{2}  \times (x + y) \times h \\  =  \frac{1}{2}  \times (16 + 20) \times 2 \\  = 36 \:  {cm}^{2}
