A rectangular coil ABCD is placed in a strong magnetic field,
as shown in figure.
(1) What is the direction of force on each arm?
(2) What is the effect of forces on the coil?
(3) Explain the effect of force on the coil, if the terminals of a
battery are interchanged.

Answer:

The force on the arms AB and CD are equal in magnitude, but opposite in direction. They form a clockwise couple. So the coil will rotate clockwise with the arm AB coming out and the arm CD going in.
