a rectangular garden is 6m wide and 8m long. What length should be added to
shorter side and reduced to longer side so as to have a rectangular garden with
area of 45 square metres.

so if X is decreased the longer side becomes 8-x

and shorter side is 6+X

so area of rectangle is

l×b=45

(6+X)(8-x)=45

48-6x+8x-x^2=45

solving it further we get the equation

x^2 - 2x -3=0

x^2-3x+X -3=0

X(x-3)+1(x-3)=0

(X+1)(x-3)=0

so

X+1 =0 ,X=-1

x-3=0, X =3

as length can't be negative so X=3
