A rectangular glass block of thickness 10 cm and refractive index 1.5 is placed over a small coin. A beaker is filled with water of refractive index 2/3 to a height of 10 cm and is placed over the small block.
a) Find the apparent position of the object when it is view at normal incidence.
b) If the eye is slowly moved away from the normal at a certain position, the coin is found to disappear due to total internal reflection. At what surface does this happen and why?

A beaker is filled with water of refractive index 4/3 to a height of 10 cm and is placed over the block. (i) Find the apparent position of the object when it is viewed from normal incidence. (ii) Draw a neat ray diagram. (iii) If the eye is slowly moved away from the normal, at a certain position, the object is found to disappear due to the TIR. The image thus formed at distance v is given by For the first surface: I’ serves as an object for the second surface. For the second surface: Note: This is an alternative to the apparent depth relation The critical angle for water–air interface Obviously, therefore, TIR takes place earlier at the water–air interface. ← Prev QuestionNext Question → Related questions 0 votes 1 answer A glass slab of thickness 3 cm and refractive index 1.5 is placed in front of a concave mirror of focal length 20 cm. asked Jun 11, 2019 in Physics by suman (71.4k points) geometrical optics jee jee mains 0 votes 1 answer A solid glass sphere with a radius R and a refractive index of 1.5 is coated with silver over a hemisphere asked Aug 1, 2019 in Physics by Rk Roy (63.6k points) geometrical optics jee jee mains 0 votes 1 answer A large glass slab (μ = 5/3) of thickness 8cm is placed over a point source of light on a plane surface. asked Jun 10, 2019 in Physics by ShivamK (68.1k points) geometrical optics jee jee mains 0 votes 1 answer A 20-cm-thick slab of glass of refractive index 1.5 is placed in front of a plane mirror and a pin is placed in front of it in the air asked Aug 1, 2019 in Physics by Rk Roy (63.6k points) geometrical optics jee jee mains 0 votes 1 answer A tank contains three layers of immiscible liquids.
