Given data : A rectangular swimming pool is 27 m wide and 49 m long.

To find : Calculate the length of a diagonal in metres to 1 decimal place.

Solution : Here we know;

Property of rectangle : opposite sides of the rectangle are parallel to each other and adjacent sides of the rectangle are perpendicular to each other.

Here, according to given,

⟹ Width of the rectangular swimming pool = 27 m

⟹ Length of the rectangular swimming pool = 49 m

Here we also call the diagonal as hypotenuse

Now, by Pythagoras theorem,

⟹ (hypo)² = (length)² + (width)²

⟹ (hypo)² = (49)² + (27)²

⟹ (hypo)² = 2401 + 729

⟹ (hypo)² = 3130

⟹ hypo = √3130

⟹ hypo = √3130

⟹ hypo = 55.9464 m

⟹ hypo = 55.95 m (approx)

Answer : The length of diagonal of a rectangular pool is 55.95 m.
