Question:

A rectangular swimming post is 40 meter long and 30 meter wide Arun swim from one corner of the post to the opposite corner what distance did he swim?

Given:

Length of rectangular swimming post = 40 m

Breadth of rectangular swimming post = 30 m

To find:

Distance travelled by Arun = x

Displacement by Arun = y

Solution:

Arun  started swimming from one corner and reaches the opposite corner .

Let ABCD be the rectangle given in attachment.

AB = DC = 40 m

AD = BC = 30 m

Let the Arun start from corner D and move to corner B.

Then distance travelled by Arun = x

x = AD + AB

= 30 + 40

= 70 m.

Displacement of Arun is given by diagonal of rectangle.

Displacement of Arun = y

\textsf{DB=}\sqrt{(DA)^2+(AB)^2}

DB=\sqrt{30^2+40^2}

\sqrt{900+1600}

DB=\sqrt{2500}

\textsf{DB=50m}

Answer:

Displacement = y =  50m

Hence the distance swum by Arun from one corner to the other corner is 50 m
