QUESTION

A rectangular water reservoir id 10.8 m by 3.75 m at the base. Water flows into it at the rate of 18 m/s through a pipe having cross-section 7.5 cm * 4.5 cm. Find the height in which water will rise in 30 minutes.

ANSWER

\bold{Length \ of \ the \ Rectangular \ Reservoir} = 10.8 m\\\bold{Width \ of \ the \ Rectangular \ Reservoir} = 3.75 m

\bold{Volume \ of \ Rectangular \ Reservoir} =  10.8*3.75*h\\                                                           =(40.5*h)m^{3}--     (1)

\bold{Cross \ section \ of \ the \ Pipe} = 7.5 * 4.5  \\= 33.75 cm^{2}  \\= 0.003375 m^{2}

\bold{Speed \ of \ water} = 18m/s

\bold{Distance \ covered \ in \  1800s} = 18 * 1800 \\= 32400m

\bold{ Volume \ of \ Water \ flowed \ in  \ 30  \ m  = cross \ section \ of \ pipe * \ distance \ covered}\\ = 0.003375 * 32400 \\= 109.35 m^{3} --    (2)

From (1) and (2)

40.5 * h = 109.35

=> h = 2.7 m
