Heya...!

a medium containg concentration more than cytoplasm of a cell(which is placed in that medium), then that medium can be called as HYPERTONIC MEDIUM

if a medium contains concentrationless than cytoplasm of cell (which is placed in that medium), then that medium can be called as HYPOTONIC MEDIUM

You might be knowing a basic chemistry principle that, water moves from high concentration(water) to low concentraion(water)

so, in case of a cell placed in hypertonic medium, water moves out of the cells and this results in SHRINKAGE of that cell

in case of cell placed in hypotonic, water moves from medium to cell and this results in SWELLING followed by BURSTING of the cell,

so, according to the question, the red blood cell was placed in a hypotonic medium

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.
