The colour of an object depends on the frequencies of light that it reflects. A red ball appears to be red in white light because it absorbs all the other visible frequencies present in white light and reflects the ones in the red spectrum. A white ball on the other hand reflects all the frequencies, and appears brighter, which our eyes perceive as white colour. A red ball in red light effectively reflects back almost all the light incident upon it, which makes it  brighter, causing the illusion of whiteness to our eyes.
