A refrigerator operating between -5°C and 27°C has the capacity of 800 tons. Consider the refrigerator to work upon reversed Carnot cycle. Latent heat for ice formation from water may be taken as 335 kJ/kg. Determine the mass rate of ice formation considering water being supplied at atmospheric temperature of 27°C.

given that, refrigerator capacity will be 800*3.5=2800kJ/s this is the heat extraction rate.

suppose that the ice fornation rate be " m" kg/s

∴heat to be removed from per kg of  water formation of water into ice

=4.18*(27-0)+335 kj/kg

work during expansion Wt=1*Cp*(T3-T4)

                                       Wt=1*1.005*(300-179.5)=121.55 kJ/s

refrigerator effect is realized during prosses4-1, refrigerator effect will be

                                    Qref=1*Cp*(T1-T4)

                                      Qref=1*1.005(240-179.5)= 61.25Kj/s=17.5 TON

net work will be=Wc-Wt = 230.27-121.55 = 108.72kj/s

COP = Qref/Wc-Wt

=Qref/Wc-W

=61.25/108.72

=0.56

refrigerator capacity =17.5TON
