I live in a locality, which has a mixed population in terms of religion, employment and language. The total population of the immediate neighbourhood is 89,000 men, women and children. 32,110 men, 30,290 women and 26,600 children and youth make up the population. The population of children below 16 is 10,800, while that in the age groups of 16-18 and 18-24 is 8,600 and 7,200 respectively.

59%, 26%, 7% and 8% of the school going children go to English medium, Hindi medium, Urdu medium and Bengali medium schools respectively. Among the youth, Commerce is the stream of choice, as an overwhelming 72% are studying commerce; Science and Arts have attracted 18% and 10% respectively.

In terms of religious faith, 54% are Hindus, 25% Muslims, 11% Christians, 5% Buddhists and 3% Jains respectively. Quite surprisingly, 2% are non-believers or atheists. Our neighbourhood is made up of 58% non-vegetarians and 42% vegetarians. 67% own cars, out of which 21% possess more than one vehicle. 87% of the population are members of nuclear families, while the rest live in joint families. 36% of the population is employed in the Government sector; 23%,11%,18% and 12% work in the private sector, teach in educational institutions, run businesses of their own and are self-employed professionals respectively. Among the self-employed are doctors, chartered accountants, advertising personnel and consultants.
