A rescue plane is flying horizontally at a speed of 30 m/s and at an altitude of 125 m when it drops a warning flare. Neglecting air resistance and assuming that the plane does not change its course, speed, altitude, how far from the plane is the flare when it hits the ground?

Given:
- Rescue plane flying at 30 m/s
- Height is 125 metres
To find:
- Distance of the flare from the plane when it reaches ground.
Calculation:
So, this question is basically a problem of HEIGHT-GROUND Projectile.
- When the flare is released from the plane, both the plane and the flare will also have a initial horizontal velocity of 30 m/s.
So, there will be no relative displacement between the plane and flare in the X axis.
- Only Y axis relative displacement has to be considered.
- And this will be equal to the height from which the flare is released (i.e. height of plane).
So, distance between plane and flare when it reaches ground is 125 metres.
Hope It Helps.
