A researcher adds barium hydroxide to hydrochloric acid to form a whitecoloured barium chloride. Which option gives the balanced chemical equation
of the reaction?
(a) HCl + Ba(OH)2 --------------> BaCl2 + 2HOH
(b) 2HCl + Ba(OH)2 -----------> BaCl2 + 2HOH
(c) 2HCl + Ba(OH)2 -------------> BaH2 + 2HCl + O2
(d) HCl + 2Ba(OH) ----------------> 2BaCl2 + 2HOH + O2

2) A researcher adds barium hydroxide to hydrochloric acid to form a white-colored barium

chloride. Which option gives the balanced chemical equation of the reaction?

(a) HCl + Ba(OH)2 à BaCl2 + 2HOH

(b) 2HCl + Ba(OH)2 à BaCl2 + 2HOH

(c) 2HCl + Ba(OH)2 à BaH2 + 2HCl + O2

(d) HCl + 2Ba(OH) à 2BaCl2 + 2HOH + O2

Correct Answer: Option (b)

LOB: Apply Law of Conservation of Mass in order to balance chemical equations

The balanced chemical reaction is given below -

  1. The correct balanced chemical reaction is - (b) 2HCl + Ba(OH)2 -----------> BaCl2 + 2HOH
  2. At the reactant side, 4 Hydrogen atoms, 2 chlorine atoms are present along with 2 oxygen atom and 1 atom of barium.
  3. So, product side will contain 1 barium atom, 2 chlorine and oxygen atoms and 4 atoms of hydrogen are present.
  4. Barium chloride finds application in purification of brine, case hardening of steel etc.
