Given :

Temperature of source = 673K

Temperature of sink = 293K

To Find :

Efficiency of the heat engine.

Solution :

❒ Efficiency of a heat engine is given by

  • η = 1 - T₂ / T₁

» η denotes efficiency

» T₂ denotes temp. of sink

» T₁ denotes temp. of source

By substituting the given values;

➙ η = 1 - T₂ / T₁

➙ η = 1 - 293 / 673

➙ η = 1 - 0.44

η = 0.565

Knowledge BoosteR :

The efficiency of heat engine :

  • depends upon the temperature of the source and the sink.
  • is independent of the nature of the working substance.
  • is the same for all reversible engines working between the same two temperature.
  • is directly proportional to the temperature difference (T₁ - T₂)
  • is always less than 100%
