A ribbon 22 1/2 cm long is cut into a number of equal pieces, each measuring 1 1/4 cm. How many pieces was the ribbon cut into?

If the original ribbon was cut into 27 equal pieces, what would have been the length of each piece (in cm)?

Answer:

total length of ribbon = 22 ½ cm

it is to be cut in equal pieces

each measuring 1 ¼ cm

hence no of pieces = 22 ½ ÷ 1 ¼ = 45/2 ÷ 5/4

= 45/2 × 4/5 = 9/1 × 2/1

= 18/1

= 18 pieces
