A right triangle has one side that measures 4 in. The angle opposite that side measures 80o. What is the length of the hypotenuse of the triangle? Round to the nearest tenth.

BC = 4 in

AC = hypotenuse

AB = base

BC = perpendicular = 4 in

using the formula

tan80 = perpendicular/base = BC/AB

tan80 = 4/AB

AB = 0.705 in

hypotenuse is given using Pythagorean theorem as

AC = sqrt(AB² + BC²)

inserting the above values in the formula

AC = sqrt(0.705² + 4²)

AC = 4.1 in
