a ring of bark was removed from a tree in spring.the tree continued to live through summer but a swelling appeared on the bark above the ring while the bark below shrived up. why?

when the bark was removed the phloem was also removed along with it but the xylem of the plant remained the same that is the reason the water uptake was not disturbed but the food uptake was lost , the bark swelled up because of accumulation of water and the lower part shrived up because it didnt get enough food
