When a ringing alarm clock is placed in vacuum, we would not be able to hear it's ticking sound because sound cannot travel in vacuum. Vacuum doesn't have any particles in it for the sound to propagate. While, in solids, liquids, gases, there are particles through which sound waves travel easily. The particles vibrate due to the sound waves, helping us to hear sound.

Hope it helps u.
