In a rocket, the fuel burns and hot exhaust gases are produced. ... This backwards force equals the force pushing the rocket forwards. Newton's Third Law of Motion means that rockets work in space, as well as in the atmosphere - they don't have topush against the ground to keep moving.

It works based on NEWTON'S THIRD LAW OF MOTION:-

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction acting on two different objects.

the fuel is in the backward direction, which is the action and the reaction is that the rocket is pushed in forward direction as a result the rocket is being pushed forwards even in space.
