Initial thrust on the rocket is  1.6 x 10⁵ N if a rocket of initial mass 8000 kg ejects at a constant rate of 16 kg with constant relative speed of 10 km per second

Given:

  • A rocket of initial mass 8000 kg
  • Ejects at a constant rate of 16 kg with constant relative speed of 10 km per second

To Find:

  • The initial thrust on the rocket

Solution:

Initial thrust on the rocket is same as Force

F = Rate of change of momentum

F = d(mv)/dt

F = m.dv/dt  +  v. dm/dt

F = v. dm/dt          ( ∵ dv/dt = 0  as constant)

v = 10 km/s  = 10 x 10³ m/s

dm/dt   =  16 kg /s

F =  10 x 10³ x 16

F = 160 x 10³ N

F = 1.6 x 10⁵ N

Initial thrust on the rocket is  1.6 x 10⁵ N
