When a rod dipped in Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is brought to the mouth of a bottle containing liquid Ammonia (NH3), dense white fumes are observed. Over time, the white fumes condense to form a solid white mass. This mass is ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). It is formed due to the reaction between HCl and NH3.

This reaction is generally used in the Solvay process for the manufacture of Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3). Due to the nature of both reactants, air often has to be pumped through the reaction chamber. The reaction is as follows:

HCl + NH3  -------->   NH4Cl
