Given:

A roof is supported on 7 rafters, each 6 1/2 ft long .at 70 cents a running foot,

To find:

How much did these rafters cost?

Solution:

The length of each rafter = 6\frac{1}{2} \:ft = \frac{13}{2} \:ft

The no. of rafters by which the roof is supported = 7

∴ The total length of 7 rafters = \frac{13}{2} \times 7 = \frac{91}{2}\:ft

Now,

If the cost of 1 ft long rafter = $ 0.70

Then,

The cost of \frac{91}{2} \:ft long rafters = $ 0.70/ft × \frac{91}{2} \:ft = $ 31.85

Thus, the cost of these rafters is → $ 31.85.
