or, 2x^2 -2x +11x - 11 =0

or, 2x(x - 1) +11(x - 1) = 0

or, (x - 1)(2x + 11) = 0

From the above relation,

x = 1 or x = -11/2

so, x = 1

The width of the verandah is 1 m.
