A room 8.3m long and 5.4m wide is surrounded by a verandah all round. The

verandah is 1.4m wide. Find the cost of cementing the verandah at Rs. 2 per

square metre. ​

Given,

length of the room, l = 8.3 meter

width of the room, b = 5.4 meter

verandah surrounding the room = (l + 1.4 + 1.4) meter and (b + 1.4 + 1.4) meter

Rate of cementing verandah = Rs 2 per meter

To find,

Cost of cementing the verandah = ?

Solution,

Area covered by room = length × breadth

                                      = 8.3 × 5.4 meters

                                      =  44.82 sq meters

Area of room with attached verandah = length × breadth

                                                               = (8.3 + 1.4 + 1.4) × (5.4 + 1.4 + 1.4 )

                                                               = (11.1) × (8.2) meters

                                                               = 91.02 sq meters

Therefore, area of the verandah = area of room attached with verandah -                          

                                                         area of room

                                                     = 91.02 - 44.82 sq meters

                                                     = 46.2 sq meters

Rate of cementing verandah per sq meter = Rs 2

Cost of cementing 46.2 sq meters = 46.2 × 2

                                                         = Rs 92.4

Hence the cost of cementing the verandah is Rs 92.4
