first convert the room dimensions into cm for simplicity purposes.

length = 5.4*100

= 540cm

breadth = 4.8*100

= 480cm

Dimensions of carpet :

length = 540-40

= 500cm

breadth = 480-40

= 440cm

(this is because there is a 40cm margin between the carpet and the walls of the room.)

now we can go ahead convert the cm measurements to m as the main calculation is over

dimensions of carpet :

length = 500/100

= 5m

breadth = 440/100

=4.4m

now we find the area of the carpet (rectangle)

= length*breadth

= 5*4.4

= 22 square meters
