Solution

Given:-

  • A's mother is four times as old as A
  • After five years, her mother will be three times as old as she will be then.

Find :-

  • Thier present ages

Explanation

Let,

  • Age of A's mother = x years
  • Age of A = y years

According to question,

Case 1.

==> x = 4y

==> x - 4y = 0__________(1)

Case 2.

==> (x + 5) = 3×(y + 5)

==> x - 3y = 15 - 5

==> x - 3y = 10_________(2)

Sub. equ(1) & equ(2)

==> -4y + 3y = -10

==> -y = -10

==> y = 10

Keep in equ(1)

==> x - 4 × 10 = 0

==> x = 40

Hence

  • Present age age of A's Mother = 40 years
  • Present age of A = 10 years
