Answer:

Many years ago a sailor who was on a voyage to South America, decided to go ashore and try his luck as a salesman. Before leaving London he had come across an old woman who had sold him a large bundle of red woollen caps, which he thought he would be able to sell with some profit to make a start in his new country.

He left the ship in the early morning and started walking, the bundle of caps on his back. On his way from the small trading post to the nearest town he had to pass a small forest. The day was hot, so at noon when the sun was right overhead he had a quick meal in the shade of a large tree, and decided to take a nap and wait for the day to cool. He tore a cap from his bundle, put it on his head, and went to sleep.

When he woke up, he found to his great astonishment and anger that his bundle of caps was gone. He swore at himself for not having been more careful, but as there was nothing to be done about it, he got to his feet to carry on his journey, wondering how he would live.

As he stood up, the air around him filled with noise, and he heard screams and shrieks all around him. He looked up and saw to his astonishment that the trees were full of monkeys, each wearing a red woollen cap on its head! The monkeys had evidently seen him take the cap from the bundle, and had put them on their heads just as they had seen him do.

The sailor had very little experience with monkeys, so he did not at all know how to get his caps back. No matter what he did, the monkeys only grinned and chattered, climbing further into the trees as he tried to reach them. He tried calling them in the friendliest manner possible, begging them to give the caps back, he tried threatening them in a language no one could misunderstand. All to no avail. As he got more and more frustrated, he threw stones at them, using the strongest curses he knew. Finally, he started jumping up and down in a rage, shaking his fists in their direction. To his amazement, the monkeys did the same to him. A sudden thought burst in his head. He tore the cap from his head and threw it to the ground as he shouted to them, “Now see what you will do, you scoundrels!” No sooner had he done this, than all the monkeys did the same, and all the caps fell down on the ground.

The sailor quickly gathered all the caps, bundled them together and ran away as fast as he could. He had discovered the secret of monkey behaviour.
