A salesman's commission is 6% on all sales upto rs. 15000 and 4% on all sales exceeding this amount. He remits rs. 30000 to his parent company after deducting his commission. Find the total sales.

Solution:
Let x be the total sales & y be the total commission.
Then according to the given conditions,
0.06*15000 + 0.04 (x - 15000) = y .........E1
& 30000 + y = x .........E2

On simplifying E1, we have
900 + 0.04x - 600 = y
Therefore, y - 0.04x = 300 .........E3

On simplifying E2, we have
x - y = 30000 .........E4

To solve this, adding E3 & E4, we get
0.96x = 30300
Therefore, x = 31562.5

Hence, the total sales is ₹31562.50/-
