Given:

A salt containing water of crystallization gave the following percentage composition mg=9.76 s=13.01 o =26.01 H2O =51.22

To find:

Calculate the simplest formula atomic mass of mg =24

Solution:

From given, we have,

A salt containing water of crystallization gave the following percentage composition mg=9.76 s=13.01 o =26.01 H2O =51.22 and the atomic mass of mg =24.

Mg

mass percentage = 9.76 %

Moles = 9.76/24 = 0.464

Simplest ratio = 0.464/0.464 = 1

S

mass percentage = 13.01 %

Moles = 13.01/32 = 0.464

Simplest ratio = 0.464/0.464 = 1

O

mass percentage = 26.01 %

Moles = 26.01/16 = 1.625

Simplest ratio = 1.625/0.464 = 4

H2O

mass percentage = 51.22 %

Moles = 51.22/18 = 2.846

Simplest ratio = 2.846/0.464 = 7

Therefore, the simplest formula is MgSO4.7H20
