A salt is a compound formed from an acid by the replacement of the hydrogen in the acid by a metal. Salts are formed when an acid react a base. A strong acid and strong base form a salt that is neutral (pH value of 7). NaCl (common salt) is formed by reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solution. This is the salt that is used in food. Deposits of solid salts are found in several parts of the earth. These deposits of large crystals are often brown due to impurities. This is called rock salt. Beds of rock salt were formed when seas of bygone ages dried up. The common salt thus obtained is an important raw material for various materials of daily use, such as sodium hydroxide, baking soda, washing soda, bleaching powder.
