A salt is an ionic compound produced from the reaction of an acid with a base. Which part of the salt ( the cation or anion ) comes from the acid? Which part comes from the base? Give your answer based on the example given below

H2SO4 (aq) + Al (OH) 3 (aq) gives Al2 (SO4) 3 (aq) + H2O (l)

Cation(a positively charged ion) comes from the base and anion(a negatively charged ion) comes from acid.

We know that metals are positively charged as they lose electrons and non-metals are negatively charged as they gain electrons.

In the example above:

H2SO4+Al(OH)3--------》Al2(SO4)3+H2O

H2 from acid and OH from base combines to form water.

The remaining compounds are Al which us a metal and is positively charged and SO4 which is a group of non-metals and is negatively charged.

Here, Hydrogen is the cation and sulphur is the anion and aluminium is the cation and hydroxide is the anion. In the product,Alumium sulphate is the salt in which the cation aluminium comes from the base and the anion sulphate comes from the acid.
