A sample solution contains small amounts of Na 2 CO 3 . This solution is reacted slowly

with dil HCl , following reactions occur in steps

a) Na 2 CO 3 (aq) +HCl(aq) →NaHCO3  (aq)+NaCl(aq)

b) NaHCO3  (aq)+HCl(aq)→NaCl(aq) )+CO 2 (g) )+H 2 O(l)

You are given phenolphthalein indicator solution, how will you distinguish these

two steps?

c) How is the neutralization of a carbonate with an acid different from the

neutralization of an oxide or a hydroxide?

Answer:1)THIS SOLUTION IS REACTED SLOWLY BECAUSE IT IS AN NETURALIZED REACTION

WE WILL DISTINGUISH IT BY THE COLOUR IF IT IS ACID IT WILL TURN TO BLUE LITMUS RED AND IF IT IS A BASE IT WILL TURN TO RED LITMUS BLUE

Explanation:YOU CAN EASILY DISTINGUISH BY ITS COLOUR
