Let r be the radius of satellite then,

v○^2=GMrv02=GMr

Applying conservation of Mechanical energy between points A (the satellite position when its suddenly stops ) to point B on the surface of earth where it strikes with velocity v

KEKE=change in potential energy

1212mv2=−GMmr−(−GMmR)mv2=−GMmr−(−GMmR)

v2=2GMR−2GMrv2=2GMR−2GMr

=ve^2−2v○^2

v=(v2e−2v○^2)^1/2
