a-b) = the difference between their ages
therefore
5(b - (a-b)) = a
Remove the inner bracket
5(b - a + b) = a
5(2b-a) = a
10b - 5a = a
10b = a + 5a
10b = 6a
b = 6/10a
b = .6a
:
if the sum of their present age is 64. Find their present ages.
a + b = 64
replace b with .6a
a + .6a = 64
1.6a = 64
a = 64/1.6
a = 40 yrs is a's age
then
.6(40) = 24 yrs is b's age

Check this in the statement:
"I am 5 times as old as you were, when i was as old as you are."
(Difference in their ages = 16 hrs)
5(24 - 16) = 40
5(8) = 40; confirms our solution
