A school decides to take the students for school picnic to an amusement park. However, the students have to first visit an old age home and then move towards the park. If the points S, P H represent the school, the park and the old age home respectively, find the additional distance covered by the students had they travelled directly from school to the park? (Note: All distance are in km)

Answer:

Let the number of students in a group be x

If there are 3 more students in a group , then

The total number of students in a group =x+3

According to the given problem,

10×x=(x+3)×(10−2)

On simplification , we get

10x=(x+3)×8

10x=8x+24

10x−8x=24

2x=24

x=

2

24

We get,

x=12

Therefore , the total number of students in the group =12

so the additional distance covered will be (x + y ) - z

Given - school, park, and old age home are indicated by the points S, P, and H

To Find - additional distance covered by the students

Solution -

let S, P, and H be the corner points of the triangle SPH

SP be the distance between school and park and let the value be x km

PH is the distance between the park and home and lets the value be y km

SH be the distance between school and home be z km

and we know that sum of two sides of a triangle is greater than the third side

z<x + y, which justifies that they have covered the additional distance

and to find additional distance we have to know by how much z is less than x + y

and that can be calculated by simply subtracting z from the value of     x + y

so the additional distance covered will be (x + y ) - z
