Explanation:

Let x minutes be the duration of period when the school has 9 periods a day. Then

Number of periods 8 9

Duration of periods (in minutes) 45 x

Clearly, more the periods, less will be the duration of the period.

So, it is a case of inverse proportion.

∴8×45=9×x

⇒x=

9

8×45

=40

Hence, the duration of period is 40 minutes

Given :-

Current no. of periods = 6

Duration of current periods = 60 min

Future no. of periods = 9

To Find :-

The duration of future periods.

Solution :-

We know that,

Current school hours (in total) can be found out by multiplying the number of current periods with the duration of each current periods.

Current school hours = (6 × 60) min

= 360 min

= 6 hours

The school has decided to keep the school hours unchanged.

Therefore new school hours = 360 min

&

New number of periods = 9

Duration of new periods = {\dfrac{360}{9}}

= 40 min

Therefore, each period would be of 40 minutes.
