(i) the total distance is = 36000m or. 36 km.

(ii) difference between the distances covered by train and bus = 12000m or 12km.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

A school trip covered 1/3rd of the journey by boat

2/5th by train, 1/15th by bus and the

2/5th by train, 1/15th by bus and theremaining distance of 7200 m by foot.

To find :-

What was the total distance?

What is the difference between the distances covered by train and bus ?

SOLUTION :-

Let the total journey be x

by boat + by train + by bus + by foot = total journey

\sf{\dfrac{1}{3}x\:+\:\dfrac{2}{5}x\:+\:\dfrac{1}{15}x\:+\:7200m\:=\:x}

Now taking LCM (15),

\sf{\dfrac{5x\:+\:6x\:+\:x}{15}\:+\:7200\:=\:x}

\sf{\dfrac{12x}{15}\:=\:(x\:-\:7200)}

\sf{\dfrac{\cancel{12}x\:4}{\cancel{15}\:5}\:=\:(x\:-\:7200)}

\sf{\dfrac{4x}{5}\:=\:(x\:-\:7200)}

On cross multiply, we get :-

\sf{4x\:=\:5(x\:-\:7200)}

\sf{4x\:=\:5x\:-\:36000}

change the positions of -36000 and 4x across the '=' symbol.

we get,

\sf{5x\:-\:4x\:=\:36000}

\sf{x\:=\:36000m\:or\:36km}

(ii)

distance covered by train = \sf{\dfrac{2}{5}x}

\sf{\dfrac{2}{\cancel{5}}\:\times\:\cancel{36000}\:7200}

\sf{14400m}

distance covered by bus = \sf{\dfrac{1}{15}x}

\sf{\dfrac{1}{\cancel{15}}\:\times\:\cancel{36000}\:2400}

\sf{2400m}

differenve between distance covered by train and bus =

distance covered by train - disatance covered by bus

➝ 14400 - 2400

➝12000m

➝or 12km
