A science teacher was teaching his students the matter around us.When he taught, he discussed that higher is the melting point of a substance, greater will be the force of attraction between particles. If he took the example of nitrogen, mercury, iron, chalk, which will have higher inter particle force of attraction?

Answer:

The attraction between particles will be stronger in Iron.

Solids have a substantially shorter interparticle distance than liquids and gases. Gases < Liquids < SolidsGases<Liquids<Solids are the order of force of attraction in different fundamental states of matter.

At normal temperature, nitrogen is a gas. As a result, it has more space and less attraction between its particles than a solid.

At normal temperature, mercury is a liquid. As a result, it has more space and less attraction between its particles than a solid, but it has less space and more attraction between its particles than gases.

At room temperature, both chalk and iron are solid, but the force of attraction between particles in iron is stronger than in chalk. When we pound chalk, it becomes powder. Iron, on the other hand, will not change.

Hence the attraction between particles will be stronger in Iron.
