A scientist forgot to add iodine to the water in which he was rearing tadpoles. What will happen to the tadpoles and why?

Iodine is required for the synthesis of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. This thyroxine in amphibians like frogs, help in the metamorphosis of tadpoles to become a frog.

So, due to the absence of iodine no metamorphosis of the tadpoles would take place.
