Given :  A scientist named Bob was exposed to some radiation which caused him to age backward after he turned 40.

Four years later, his current age and his daughter Alice's age are in the ratio 3:1.

Determine the ratio of Bob's and Alice's age four years before Bob turned 40.

Solution:

Age of  Bob = 40

Age of Daughter = D years

some radiation which caused him to age backward after he turned 40.

so Age of Scientist after 4 years = 40 - 4 = 36 years

Daughter Age = D + 4 Years

36 /( D + 4)  = 3/1

=> D + 4 = 12

=> D = 8

Four year before 40 also

Age of Bob = 40 - 4 = 36 years

Age of Daughter = 8 - 4 = 4  Years

Ratio   36 : 4

= 9 : 1

ratio of Bob's and Alice's age four years before Bob turned 40. is 9 : 1
