A scientist while working with different elements in his lab, found that element ‘X’ forms a compound ‘H2X’ with Hydrogen, and element ‘Y’ forms a compound ‘HY’ with Hydrogen. (3)

a) Deduce the valency of elements ‘X’ and ‘Y’ based on the scientist's findings.
b) On further investigation, he found another compound ‘HY3’ formed by element ‘Y’. What, in your opinion, does this suggest about the valency of element ‘Y’?

Answer: a) Valency of X= 2

Valency of Y= 1

b) Valency of Y= 3

Explanation:

We know that whenever we form a compound we cross multiply the valency. So as per the question, H2X is formed when X combines with Hydrogen so the valency of X should be 2.

Similary, the valency of Y is 1 when Y combines with Hydrogen.
