so, P = 40% of x - 35
P = 40%x - 35...........(2)
equate (1) and (2)
30%x + 15 = 40%x - 35
15 + 35 = 40% x - 30%x
10% x = 50
10x/100 = 50
x/10 = 50
x = 500
so, total mark is x = 500 marks
pass mark, P = 30% of 500 + 15 = 150 + 15 = 165
