  • A bought the article at Rs. 500 .

Given :-

  • A sells an article to B at a profit of 20% .
  • B sells it to C at a profit of 4% .
  • C paid for the article = Rs. 624 .

To Find :-

  • The cost price of the article for A ?

Formula used :-

  • Selling price = { cost price × (100 + profit %) } / 100

Solution :-

Let us assume that, A bought the article at Rs. 100x .

So,

→ Cost price for A = Rs. 100x

→ Profit % = 20%

→ Selling price = {cost price × (100 + profit %)} / 100 = {100x * (100 + 20)}/100 = (100x * 120)/100 = Rs. 120x

then,

→ Selling price of A = Cost price of B = Rs. 120x

now,

→ B sells it to C at profit = 4%

so,

→ Selling price of article = {cost price × (100 + profit %)} / 100 = {120x * (100 + 4)}/100 = (120x * 104)/100 = Rs. 124.8x

then,

→ Selling price of B = Cost price of C = Rs. 124.8x

A/q,

→ Cost price of article for C = Rs. 624

therefore,

→ 124.8x = 624

→ 124.8x = 124.8 × 5

dividing both sides by 124.8,

→ x = 5

hence,

→ A bought the article at = 100x = 100 × 5 = Rs. 500 (Ans.)
