A sells some articles to B at a profit of 5%.
B sells the same to C at a profit of 20% and C
sells them to D at a profit of 25%. What would

Let CA, CB & CC denote the cost-prices of the article paid by respectively A, B & C.

It is mentioned that A sells the article to B at a profit of 25% and B sells it to C at a profit of 20%. So we get the following relations,

CB = (1 + 0.25)*CA = 1.25*CA …… (1)

CC = (1 + 0.20)*CB = 1.20*CB = 1.20*1.25*CA [from (1)]

or CC = 1.50*CA = (1 + 50/100)*CA …… (2)

Therefore, we find from (2) that if A had sold the article directly to C, then A’s profit percentage would have been = 50% [Ans]
