A Senate committee has 5 Democrats and 5 Republicans. In how many ways can they sit around a circular table if each member sits next to two members of the other party? (Two seatings are the same if one is a rotation of the other.)

Answer:

28,800

Choose 5 seats that the Democrats will sit in, there will be 5! = 120 ways that they can sit. Now, the Republicans can sit on either left or right of the Democrats, so there are 2 x 5! ways to sit the Republicans. Now, the remaining Independant can only take the remaining seat.

It comes out as 5! x 5! x 2 = 120 x 120 x 2 = 28,800
