A serious threat to the institution of family

We should be aware that the family as an institution is under serious threat. There is an abundance of evidence that this is happening because of the rapid rise in family-related crimes and tragedies.

When a family breaks up it’s a tragedy. When a family member gets on the wrong side of the law, it’s a tragedy.

When a family feud ends in a homicide, it’s a tragedy.

When children in a family stop going to school, it’s a matter of grave concern

When homeless family members end up on the streets, it’s a national shame.

If the institution of the family is strong and intact none of these would happen or there would be fewer cases.

Earlier this year, a homeless man was buried by strangers because no relatives came forward to give him a dignified send-off and a decent burial.

Not long after that another man who appeared to have been disowned by his own family was buried with his close friends beside him. At least, he had people who knew him and loved him, gave him a proper farewell.

The increasing incidents of rape, incest and other sexual offences within families and outside suggest we are in throes of a social upheaval. Predators who are driven by lust and instant self gratification commit these heinous crimes.

They use their position of authority and influence to take advantage of the vulnerability and innocence of the victims.

It is really sad when the perpetrators are those entrusted to protect the victims.
