The shape of sewer must be circular from the bottom and rectangular from the top.

Explanation:

The shape of the sewer is circular from bottom (a semi circle from bottom to above) because circular has maximum stability as compared witrh any other shape. As, it does not have any edges or vertices. haence, it posses maximum stability.

The gravitation force is also towards the centr of earth, that is why, circular cross-section area is best suited for stability.

Above portion is rectangular because rectangular portion has maxim stability for load carrying according to area pressent to take load. Side walls are strainght so that if there is more waste in less area. The increase in pressure cause load towards outside direction which may tends to collapse the structure. so, above rectangular cross-sectional area is used.

hence, cross-sectional area is a 'U' shapes structure.
