Light travels continuously in a straight line. When light is blocked by an opaque object, it does not pass through the object. However other light that are not blocked continue traveling in straight line. The dark areas where there were no light is what we call shadow.
So the net effect of this is a shadow always forming opposite the source of light.
There is no shadow in portions passed by light.
If an object is transparent to light a very light shadow is formed.
